New Year's Abroad.    We decided to shorten our Christmas visit to take advantage of holiday experiences abroad.  We would be sharing future holidays with family, hopefully many times.  But how often do you get to bring in the New Year in Belgrade, Serbia?
Other than getting swindled by the taxi driver from the airport, we really enjoyed Belgrade.  We stayed one night at  Hotel Moscow in Belgrade.  One night was all we could afford.  It is a classic ornate Eastern European hotel that

is beginning to show it age.   The next three nights were in Intercontinental Hotel, a more modern and more comfortable accommodation.  We shopped, took in a movie & ate wonderfully.  The breakfast buffet at the hotel is first rate. For New Year's Eve we roamed the streets sampling the offerings of local food vendors and listening to live bands that seemed to be on every other street corner.  This was not a wild party.  All sorts of folks wandered the streets, old, teens, grandparent with grandkids.  The atmosphere was very laid back & sociable.

"Oh, No!"

Our teaching experience in Sarajevo was cut short in March by Denny's pneumonia. (See Bosnian Bugle #7.)  We miss the kids a lot.  When we left early the staff, students & parents showered us with a show of appreciation that was truly heart warming (and teary).   The disconnection from our landlord was more feisty than teary.  We had committed some minor transgressions upon the apartment, such as welding an aluminum pot to the glass stove top (Those things get really hot!), smudges on the walls from picture stickum, etc.  His vacuum cleaner died during our tenure and he thought we should pay for a replacement.  He wanted $1,600; finally settled for $600.

Above is my Science 11 class at the microscopes and to the right is Sandy's 4th-5th grade class displaying their Cultural Studies reports.  In these two photos you see kids from 14 different countries.  If you are interested in that kind of experience check out Quality Schools International at  QSI.org  on the internet.

FLASH BACK !!

For those of you who were not at our wedding, and perhaps for many who were (This occurred after the wine was served.), this is how I expressed my feelings about my lover & best friend:  "She enters the room like a fresh breeze on a sultry summer day.  Her impish grin and her cheery 'Hi!' chase away any clouds in my mind.  And no matter the weather outside, the sun is shining in that room."             And it's still true.
